What’s a hand salad, you ask? We define hand salad as crunchy first course that one (you) can eat without any plates or utensils. A fork-less salad especially comes in handy in any outdoor meal setting i.e. a BBQ or a picnic, or if you live in a small apartment and cant afford two sets of dishes (who has that many plates, for real).
Romaine is the easiest for this - crunchy and hearty, it adds texture, support, and color to any casual meal. If you’re BBQ-ing you can also throw the hearts directly on the grill for an easy char. Yeah. That’s a thing.
We like to serve ours with a classic Caesar dressing, but this is a freaking salad, so as long as you have a dressing with enough acid, a bit of crunch (croutons, radish, etc.), you can really do whatever your little heart desires.
Method
-
Cut romaine hearts in half, hot-dog style and wash well. Remove any brown leaves on the outside.
-
Grill over indirect heat for 10-15 minutes or until they’re as charred as you like.
-
Messily drizzle dressing over the hearts, making sure to get in aallll the crevices. Add more dressing. Duh.
-
Sprinkle parm over the hearts, squeeze lemon, sprinkle salt, crack a bunch of pepper.
-
Crumble up a bunch of Rye Crackers or Sourdough Crackers OR BOTH.
Pick up and crunchy crunch away. Boom. Health.
